How to: Rearrange icons on the desktop to a preferred location.
Solution:
Move the icons to the desired position on the desktop. Right-click the desktop and select or clear 'Auto Arrange' and 'Line up Icons'.
Use one of the following methods to rearrange icons on the desktop:
1) Enable 'Auto Arrange', which inserts icons in the nearest invisible column on the desktop (icons then always jump back to this columnar arrangement regardless of where they are moved):
a) Right-click any blank area of the desktop. (A pop-up menu appears.)
b) Select 'Arrange Icons'. (Another pop-up menu appears.)
c) Select 'Auto Arrange' to place a check mark next to this option.
2) Disable 'Auto Arrange' (icons may be placed anywhere on the desktop and will not move to a columnar arrangement):
a) Right-click any blank area of the desktop. (A pop-up menu appears.)
b) Select 'Arrange Icons'. (Another pop-up menu appears.)
c) Clear the 'Auto Arrange' check mark.
d) (Optional) Select 'Line up Icons'. (This method lines icons up in straight rows and columns. The user can still move icons to the desired area.)
e) Drag the icons to the desired location on the desktop.
3) Clear both options 1) and 2) by clicking the option to remove the check mark. Do not check 'Line up Icons'. (The icons remain exactly where you move them.)
